I've been ..."Them" is "us."
I've been hiking, biking and 4x4ing in the Moab area my whole life. I've made the 6 hour drive from where I live four times already this year and am going back this month. Every time in a gas hog truck. When I sit drinking a cold beer (brewed in an other state) and eating fish and chips (fish as in from the ocean) at a side walk cafe in Moab after a hard day's play I am astonished at the amount of gas-guzzling traffic. Massive 4x4 trucks trailering ATVs, rock crawlers, trail bikes, buggies. Tour busses, motorcycles, motor homes....car shows, 4x4 events. And the truck traffic - all hauling the stuff we demand in our daily lives, especially the fuel tankers.
When I'm off-roading, or better yet bicycling and often hiking it is on roads built by the oil and mineral exploration industry, some as long ago as the 1920's.

If those of us who advocate a green lifestyle and love the canyons of Utah really put our money where our months are how would we get to Moab? Not many of those tourists are pedaling loaded touring bicycles.

My point is that nothing is easy, nothing is black and white, everything is a complex mix of factors and we are all hypocrites to some degree or other. Maybe the the energy companies are greedy and unreasonable in where they want to drill. Maybe the government is corrupt and in the pockets of industry. But who here can say with a straight face that they are not part of the problem as consumers demanding our stuff and paying unrealistically cheap prices for it????Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741926366791123674.post-597360088835316462012-05-02T13:05:14.056-06:002012-05-02T13:05:14.056-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741926366791123674.post-89858676936317627252012-05-02T06:26:17.265-06:002012-05-02T06:26:17.265-06:00If they are so willing and eager to destroy such a...If they are so willing and eager to destroy such a beautiful natural area, where does it end? If we don't stop them now and force them to look for alternatives, we can't start bitchin' when they want to destroy our backyards or towns to create oil fields. There are alternatives that wouldn't destroy the amazing beauty of this country and put wildlife in danger.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741926366791123674.post-82425763143714032612012-04-19T05:16:27.570-06:002012-04-19T05:16:27.570-06:00Thank you for sharing this so those of us who don&...Thank you for sharing this so those of us who don't live in Utah can speak up!Chinghttp://fu-land.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741926366791123674.post-31707724536789047652012-04-16T23:15:27.918-06:002012-04-16T23:15:27.918-06:00Thank you for this- will certainly share. sorry Im...Thank you for this- will certainly share. sorry Im late getting to the party here....Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09326305819767050457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4741926366791123674.post-28389942097467552362012-04-04T11:47:52.689-06:002012-04-04T11:47:52.689-06:00Drilling is up on private and state land only.
